Growing up in an environment where success and achievement were rare, I’ve often felt the pressure to pursue accolades. To know that I was doing something different. I didn’t want to be the kid from the small town still there in 40 years. While there is nothing wrong with staying put, most prefer what they are comfortable with; I didn’t feel that was the avenue for me. I wanted more.

But while obtaining all that I have desired has satisfied me momentarily, it was simply a step on the never-ending treadmill of ‘success.’ The competition to gain something more did not provide true fulfillment or purpose. Just as Arthur Schopenhauer predicted, my life suddenly acquired meaning when I began investing in serving others. Seeing the joy of those whose lives I could positively impact gave me greater satisfaction than any successful venture. No material achievement can compare with the lasting value bestowed to others when you put them before yourself.

As I have matured, I have come to understand that investing in being of value is much more advantageous than pursuing success. With intentional and valuable actions, we can contribute to constructing a legacy that lasts not just for ourselves but for everyone else in our lives. By leading with morality and understanding the importance of helping others, we can construct a fulfilling life where valuables are prioritized over accolades.

Leadership is critical to how our societies, businesses, and organizations function. It is true failure rarely exists in the world around us. Your goal may have been to do something, literally anything. For brevity, let us say it was to complete 100 push-ups.

So, you made it to 37 and are exhausted. You stopped. In your mind, you failed the task at hand. But in reality, you didn’t fail. You just had an unrealistic expectation of performance based on your current level of capabilities.

But what does that mean?

It means you are still progressing. You accomplished some push-ups, and there are two distinct options to move forward on.

Option 1: You lower your expectations to 37 push-ups.

Option 2: You adjust your input to accomplish the goal.

Option 2 requires a daily training regiment, proper diet, strength, and speed training. Option 2 is a long-term game to adjust the input necessary to achieve. This is where we grow. This is where we improve.

You did not fail. You had a lofty goal and now have a good assessment of where to go moving forward.

What if you can’t control inputs?

In the example provided above, failure is a deeply personal connection. It is easy for us to be motivated and alter our inputs on personal endeavors. But what if it is a group project? How do I control the input alterations of other people?

It can be beneficial for everyone involved to review the expectations and ensure they are met constantly, so you can. In this frame, we are choosing Option 1. We are adjusting our expectations to something that can be achieved without overreaching our ability to perform. It is setting the success rate just above what is currently capable. It is more frequent testing of achievement to create smaller goals or steps to execute.

Sometimes no expectations are better.

Not having expectations can open up a world of possibilities for success. Without the burden of anticipation or preconceived notions, we can explore new avenues that broaden our horizons and lead to engaging and sometimes unexpected results. For example, if you’re looking for a job without expecting any specific outcome, you are more likely to find one that you love, and that will further develop your existing skills and strengths. Similarly, suppose you’re planning an event and have no expectations of how it should unfold. In that case, chances are you will come up with creative and unique ideas where everyone involved gets something beneficial out of the experience. Ultimately not having expectations removes constraints and barriers so that you can explore everyone’s pathway to accomplishment.

It should be noted that not having expectations should only be reserved for the beginning stages of a project. Once a path has been decided, expectations should follow. Expectations are a measurement of progress. True failure rarely exists, but having the ability to change direction quickly is a must.

Staying productive and feeling energized is all about working smarter, not harder. We must be mindful of our energy levels as they inevitably fluctuate throughout the day. Knowing when it’s time to call it quits and take a break is important to maintain our productivity so that we can start fresh tomorrow. Taking active breaks throughout the day can help renew our focus, giving us the power to reach our goals and progress. Finishing tasks with a sense of accomplishment each day and having a plan for tackling the rest will provide peace of mind, allowing you to end your workday on a strong note.

It’s important to know your limits and be okay with saying no to things. Your schedule is already full, so don’t try to add more to it. Let go of some of your commitments to make room for other things. Don’t be afraid to take a break from time to time – you deserve it! Learn how to delegate tasks and responsibilities, so you’re not always trying to do everything yourself. Be mindful of your energy levels and know when to call it quits for the day.

As a business owner, you know that customer engagement is essential to your success. But what goes into creating a lasting relationship?

It starts with providing your customers with content they’re looking for and enjoy consuming. When you provide great content that is useful, creative, and entertaining to your audience, their loyalty will naturally grow over time. Customers appreciate it when companies take the time to create meaningful content that engages them on different levels and not just tries to sell them something.

The better the quality of content you can provide for your customers, the greater your chance of creating an emotionally-charged connection with them that will keep them returning for more. Your customers will look forward to experiencing inspired content from you, which means having great content is key. And if your great content constantly keeps them engaged and entertained, then there’s no doubt they’ll stay loyal for a long time.

So, what if they leave? What are your actions?

My experience:

Attempting to cancel a service can often be frustrating and tiring, but I was determined not to lose my patience. Throughout the process, I refused to feel cowed by intrusive questions or be browbeaten into sticking with something that no longer held any value. The experience made me more aware of how important it is to trust in one’s instincts and take control of decisions regarding what is best for oneself.

I was repeatedly asked why I was canceling the service. The business is not entitled to my reasoning. Maybe it is personal, a financial hardship, or maybe I don’t find the content valuable anymore. Whatever the reasoning, it is not the customer’s fault.

For the next fifteen minutes, I was a sales attempt. Every package was thrown at me. Each one was more frustrating than the last.

At the end of the day, content is what matters. Quality and value are key in any space, and customers will recognize a good product when they see one. Loyalty cannot be bought, nor can success be guilted into existence; rather, great products have customers knocking down the doors and clamoring for inclusion. Building relationships through quality service and excellent content is far more profitable than any financial incentive package could ever hope to achieve. Great companies do not need to bribe people into staying with them; instead, they rely on their top-notch offerings to draw loyal customers who trust and invest in them as much as they do in their success.

Refuse to Fail: Overcoming imposter syndrome.

What are you refusing?

Endurance is not easily achieved and takes a great deal of personal strength. It can involve facing physical or emotional challenges, even in extreme adversity. Refusing to surrender takes an entirely different type of courage – one that requires determination and perseverance to achieve success. It is a choice every person makes for themselves when considering whether options that look bleak or difficult. To refuse to surrender is a sign of confidence and adaptability. Despite any obstacles you may face, you are determined to do whatever it takes to succeed.

How we handle adversity is the beginning point of our capability. Admiral Stockdale is a shining example. Tortured for eight years, he refused to surrender. He refused to surrender information or secrets or show any sign of weakness.

Frederick Douglas another example of refusing to surrender. Escaped slavery by sheer willpower turned into brute force. He refused to surrender when most had expected him to, kept his resolve strong, and continued forward in the freedom mission.

In times of difficulty, it is important to remember that you do not have to surrender. You can choose to keep going despite any odds that are against you.

It’s a refreshing concept that seems to get lost in the mundane world of the everyday.

There is a powerful mindset there. Refusal.

What are you refusing? Is it refusing to give up on your marriage? Refusing to let a lack of promotion stifle your career? Refusing to let the person who cut you off in traffic ruin your day?

Refusing looks different to everyone, but it should be unshakable and empowering, no matter your refusal. Only you know what will make you truly happy and content – refusing is simply clinging to that assurance and not letting anyone tell you otherwise. We all have battles we refuse to lose, from small things like staying true to our convictions to more monumental challenges like overcoming deep personal trauma. What matters is that whatever our refusals may be, we must stand firm in them without fear or hesitation. Our willingness to say no and draw a line will ensure that our future can still hold promise and hope for a better tomorrow.

Lay Off the Layoffs

From honing our budgeting skills to understanding the signs that a company is in financial trouble, there are many things we can do as employees to help avoid layoffs. Employees can work together to reduce costs and keep everyone employed.

Transparency is Key

We don’t have to accept lay-offs as a necessary cost-cutting measure any longer – not if employers learn to be more transparent and honest regarding their business operations and finances. By fostering an environment in which both employer and employee can openly discuss the outlook of the company, the collective power of the workforce can be harnessed to minimize expenses without resorting to laying off large swaths of staff. This mutual trust also pays long-term dividends by boosting morale and driving greater productivity and loyalty.

When faced with a financial crisis, laying off hard-working individuals can be an overwhelming and heartbreaking solution. However, there is another way – through an honest partnership between employers and employees. With collective creativity, employees can collaborate to contribute ideas that reduce costs without eliminating jobs. Empowering the workforce to establish long-term solutions and mutual benefits allows companies of all sizes to weather any storm and come out the other side strong and full of hope for a better future, built together by a unified workplace community.

Can it work?

Companies across industries have managed to prevent any need for layoffs by being transparent and honest with their employees. Take, for example, Cook Fox Architects, who could have downsized in response to budget cuts but instead relaid how the danger of a looming recession can create negative impacts on the company and leverage that to motivate the team to make conservative financial decisions. Instead, their open communication allowed most staff members to make collective changes with money-saving measures that led them away from layoffs and increased essential project work. A similar case emerged at Toyota Motor Europe, which decided to invest further in technology upskilling for staff—and saw an improved bottom line due to making these strategies available. It is clear then that businesses have found great success across multiple realms and contexts when they meet difficult situations with full transparency and a commitment to their staff’s future.

Even my own employer can be used as an example. Several years ago, we were facing a looming budget crisis. Clear communication and a call for ideas to cut costs were communicated throughout the organization. The collective thinking power of the entire company turned around the bottom line and created an environment where we now operate at a surplus.

Empowerment

There is a solution to the problem of layoffs, and it lies in empowering employees. The collective effort of everyone within a company to share information about the company’s outlook and reduce unnecessary costs can lead to drastic change. It’s time for everyone to come together and contribute their knowledge and skills; only then will we be able to create an environment where employers remain resilient in tough times by finding new solutions. Let’s use this flourishing workplace model and spread the message – encourage your employer to actively involve employees in analyzing the business’s state with loyalty, honesty, and open dialogue. With enough incentive, they can make layoffs a thing of the past.

It’s time for us to re-evaluate the way we think about layoffs. No company should take employees away from their families or a person’s livelihood without seriously considering their options. Instead, let’s stop thinking of layoffs as the only possible answer and work together to find meaningful ways to avoid them. With collaboration and a shared commitment to understanding our businesses better, employers can look at other creative solutions that don’t involve letting go of valuable team members. Healthy discourse is an essential component of any debate or discourse. It involves maintaining respect for all individuals involved, allowing the opportunity for beneficial exchange and discussion of differing points of view, and promoting mutual understanding. Unfortunately, in polarized times many people retreat further into echo chambers by surrounding themselves with people who share the same beliefs and opinions.

To break out of these cycles, we need to embrace dialogue with those with different viewpoints than our own and explore what we can learn from them to gain valuable new perspectives. Healthy discourse can bring us closer together, where we can truly appreciate our commonalities while still embracing our differences. Through this kind of meaningful engagement, we can push through boundaries that stand in the way of progress.

In the age of digital access, we are increasingly exposed to multiple, diverse opinions. While it can be easy to seek only information consistent with our established beliefs, it is imperative to take the time to engage with ideas that may disrupt our existing perspectives. When we begin to engage in discourse with those who view the world differently than we do, there is an incredible opportunity for growth and meaningful connections. Doing so allows us to challenge our own beliefs and will enable us to learn how to understand better and appreciate other perspectives. These conversations can be difficult and often uncomfortable, but they are essential in helping us grow as individuals and a whole. One of my favorite examples is ‘Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man.’

Investing time into engaging thoughtfully with people who think differently than we do inevitably enables us to break down barriers while deepening our understanding of one another. Be bold and open-minded, and cultivate a strong sense of curiosity – pushing past the comfort zone of our realms will help create meaningful relationships that will bring all of us forward together.

Coming together with people from different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives might not always be easy, but the rewards can be significant. Connecting with those with a different outlook than our own enlarges our perspectives, encourages creative problem-solving, and enriches us with new experiences and friendships.

Far from fearing ideological or political differences between us, let’s embrace them as an opportunity to reconnect with humanity. Such meaningful connections open the door to understanding others as well as ourselves and can benefit all of us in startling new ways.

What the World Needs

In a world full of divisiveness, we must engage in healthy discourse with one another. Connecting can bridge our beliefs and move us closer to understanding and unity. Convenience(s)

If you want something, you must be willing to work hard. It’s not enough to just want it – you have to be willing to go the extra mile, even when it’s tough. The most successful people are often willing to do what others aren’t.

Many of us have become too reliant on convenient options like online shopping, fast food delivery, and door-to-door car services. These are all great ways to save time and make life easier. However, it can come with a hefty price tag. Convenience often costs more money in the long run than doing things yourself; take, for example, the extra fee for having groceries delivered that can quickly add up if you do it regularly. Fast food delivery might seem harmless, but those costs, combined with added charges for service and tipping, can be much more expensive than eating at home or dining in restaurants.

Inconvenience isn’t all harmful. Being forced out of our comfort zones can spark creativity as we seek alternative solutions to meet our needs despite difficult circumstances. Learning to operate in an inconvenient world has its benefits. When we find ourselves in situations that are challenging and not easily navigated, it teaches us how to adapt and think on our feet. Not only does this make us stronger, but the ability to think quickly and problem-solve effectively can lead to success in many areas of life. 

Blame, Personal Accountability, and Ignorance

An ignorant person is inclined to blame others for his own misfortune. To blame oneself is proof of progress. But the wise man never has to blame another or himself.

Holding someone else accountable for our misfortunes reflects a lack of personal responsibility and can also prevent us from gaining insight into how something went wrong. Instead of blaming someone else, we should take a moment to dig deeper and think about how this misfortune could have been avoided in the first place. Engaging in honest self-reflection and asking tough questions, we invite wisdom into our lives and allow ourselves to learn from valuable lessons presented by challenging events. Only by taking ownership can we develop our problem-solving skills, foster resilience in the face of adversity, and open ourselves up to endless opportunities for growth.

You didn’t run out of gas because everything is going wrong today. You ran out of gas because you were lazy yesterday.

An ignorant person is far more than just someone who lacks knowledge and education; they refuse to accept the truth and learn from their mistakes. Ignorance prevents people from reaching their true potential and keeps them blinded from the possibilities of progress and advancement. Recognizing and accepting truths grants us understanding that enables us to take new paths in life, tackle obstacles head-on, challenge ourselves, and ultimately achieve success. Those who become students of life never cease to develop themselves by opening their minds and heart to understanding.

As stated by Epictetus’s quote, ignorant individuals close their minds to information and reality and choose only to look at what makes them comfortable. They rely heavily on pre-existing beliefs instead of accepting challenges to grow their intellect.

This refusal to change or adapt genuinely speaks for their ignorance, particularly concerning topics outside their comfort zone. An ignorant person fails to realize the importance and power of education and its ability to encourage a more open mind. Ignorance should not be worn as a badge of honor – instead, it should serve as a reminder for us all to stay informed and keep learning.

Ignorant people often blame those around them for their misfortunes due to a lack of introspection and personal responsibility. This tendency denies them the opportunity to identify flaws in their decision-making or attitudes and misplaces blame onto innocent parties, leading to unnecessary strife and distrust. It is a trait that should be discouraged at all levels of society as it costs us far more than we may realize – good relationships, wasted energy, and valuable resources.

It is a sure sign of wisdom when someone can remain calm and composed in the face of misfortune. Wise people understand that such things are sometimes beyond our control, so they do not allow it to affect their demeanor. Instead, they use misfortune as a learning opportunity and strive to see what they can learn from it so that they can come out of it better than before. This kind of mature outlook towards disasters reveals an individual’s true mental strength and sagacity, showing them in all their wisdom.

To never have to blame another or oneself is a sign of real wisdom. It means having inner faith and resilience in response to life’s difficulties and knowing that blaming someone else or ourselves resolves nothing. Blaming takes away personal accountability and robs us of our ability to find solutions.

True wisdom encourages us to focus on what we can change – our choices and behavior – rather than getting stuck in frustration over others’ actions. It implies trust in the universe and its natural order, knowing that whatever has happened, we can make something positive from it if we use our energy to make the best choice available. This single-mindedness towards growth and self-improvement through responsibility is the hallmark of true wisdom.

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.

Being nice and being kind are two virtues that are highly advantageous to cultivate. They both involve developing the capacity to think of others and be respectful and sensitive towards them. Although their definitions might seem similar, there is a critical difference between them.

Being nice is focused on politeness and courtesy, whereas being kind is exchanging care, concern, and generosity with those around us. In this modern world, we all need more of these traits while striving to navigate our lives and relationships in an increasingly complex world.

Kindness is placed under the umbrella of justice, one of the four cardinal virtues that Stoics believe need to be cultivated to live a virtuous life. Stoic philosophy highlights the importance of being kind as a fundamental virtue. It is essential to being a good person since it involves treating others fairly and empathetically. Being nice, however, is seen as less important; while it can help us build relationships and remain on good terms with others, it often focuses too much on pleasing others and avoiding conflict. Practicing kindness over niceness should thus be our aim if we wish to make moral progress, according to Stoicism.

Nice vs. Kind.

Niceness is an act. Niceness, however, can be rooted in kindness. Kindness is a character trait.

We have been given the power of choice, and with that comes the responsibility of being kind. To be kind is to always act in a way that will benefit someone or something else. It’s not just about looking good or garnering approval from those around us; it’s an understanding that living our principles includes caring for and helping others. Being kind is a conscious decision we make, and based on how we act every day, we can positively impact the world around us without expecting anything in return.

Stoic philosophy presents useful distinctions in understanding different aspects of being kind and nice. To be both kind and nice means first having deeply embedded inner values in ourselves, which will lead us to express goodness in our behavior before we strive for any external kindness or niceness towards others. Moral integrity consists of taking ethical actions that reflect our inner virtues, such as being honest and fair. On the other hand, people can have moral worth; this conveys the strength of a person’s character, not just the outward performance of specific behaviors. It goes beyond action to encompass qualities like trustworthiness, sympathy, and empathy. Ultimately, moral worth is powerful because it nurtures the fundamental character from which further small behaviors are inspired.

Being nice is an expression of morality beyond simply doing what is right or wrong. At its core, it speaks to the kindness and compassion that a person can exhibit toward others. Yet too often, people misconstrue niceness as being morally good or virtuous. While acting out of good intentions is commendable, it is essential to remember that being nice can also stem from less noble motivations such as vanity, inadequacy, or a lack of confidence.

Being nice does not imply moral worth, yet it reflects upon the moral goodness of a person’s choices and values. As such, it serves as an important reminder of our capacity for empathy and understanding of one another.

We have so many choices to make throughout the day. We can always choose to be nice to others. Repeated acts of niceness may turn us into kind people. We are driven by good intentions and actionable behaviors that serve the greater good.

Citizenship is a behavior trait. Citizenship is more than what country you live in. It is the act of being an active member of any group or community. It entails taking responsibility for the well-being and success of that group and actively contributing to it in some way. Citizenship requires commitment and a willingness to donate time, effort, and resources to make a difference.

Knowing this view of citizenship, how are you applying it to your workgroup?

Do you help others? Are you engaged with your coworkers? Do you know what everyone’s goals are? Better yet, do you help others accomplish their goals once you learn of them?

Being a citizen is hard. It requires work. Being a citizen requires dedication.

Living up to the expectations of being a citizen can be challenging. However, it is well worth the effort. Being a citizen requires conviction – believing that you are part of something bigger while still needing to take responsibility for your words and actions. It requires dedication and outward thinking, beyond yourself, to better serve your community or country. By understanding our role in the grand scheme of things, we can all make meaningful contributions as citizens – working together builds strength and resilience, leading to greater unity in society.

But that is just it; we live in an attention society. Few believe they are a part of society and view themselves as the society.

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, with studies showing that the average person spends more than two hours a day checking in on their accounts. But despite the surge in online activity, our genuine connection with each other has failed to keep up. In choosing to overshare moments from our daily lives to make them look better, we’ve just perpetuated a self-centered narrative and forgotten to take action that matters – whether volunteering at a soup kitchen or supporting an inspiring cause. If we want to build a society focused on natural well-being and productivity, we must stop pretending these values exist and start practicing them earnestly.

Being a citizen means sacrificing the self-image for the help image.

Build the society at the expense of the self. Believe in more than gaining likes.

Success is often measured by accumulation—whether material wealth, awards or social media likes. But gaining these accolades can leave us empty if it’s our only focus. It should never be about what you can extract from society but how you can use your gifts and skills to give back and add to the collective in a meaningful and selfless way. Building up our lives only to benefit ourselves has no real reward and goes against the principles of true success: inspiring those around us and propelling the human race forward together. We owe it to ourselves and those around us to reach past superficial affirmations, like likes on a photo, and strive for something more profound; working on projects that bring joy, promoting respect for others, and setting examples of personal growth—these are true desires for building a flourishing society.

I have watched families out to dinner with their faces buried in their phones. I have watched relationships suffer because the ego couldn’t let go of the past.

What is really important?

The quote by Sir Edmund Hillary is a powerful reminder that the most significant obstacle we will ever face is within ourselves. It is not the mountain we must conquer but our self-doubts, fears, and negative thoughts. We can push past these internal boundaries for physical and psychological growth. We can rise above any challenge and discover talents we never knew we had. We can focus on our potential instead of feeling overwhelmed by our limitations. Life is full of mountains that seem impossible in their way, but the mountains can be conquered with courage and perseverance.

Sir Edmund Hillary, the legendary explorer, spent much of his life doing hard things. Imagine climbing Everest, the challenges, the setbacks, the perseverance.

Pretty intense.

Now imagine climbing Everest only to compare that mountain to the internal forces we must overcome.

Further, imagine being a person who climbed Everest and still thinking the internal struggles are more significant.

What does it mean to “conquer” something or someone

Conquering something or someone means taking control and victory over an obstacle or opponent. When success is achieved, it is a sign of strength, courage, and determination. Whether conquering a physical challenge or overcoming a mental barrier, it takes effort and perseverance to achieve a desirable outcome. You must be willing to put in the hard work it takes to get what you want, yet remain balanced and grounded so that you do not become overwhelmed by success or failure.

Perseverance drives us towards inevitable triumph, with each small victory leading to more considerable breakthroughs. To conquer is to take action with confidence while keeping our minds open despite failure – no one can genuinely be conquered until they give up their dreams, creating their limitations.

Conquering is about embracing calculated risk and moving confidently toward the future, regardless of obstacles. Having our minds open to failure and learning from it allows us to try again with greater wisdom, strengthening us even further. No one can genuinely be conquered until they give up on themselves; it is only when we limit ourselves and impose boundaries on our dreams that we can no longer reach them. But conquering is genuinely within reach if we hold fast and never give up. It demands persistence, bravery, and faith in oneself – but those willing to endure will discover that the reward of victory outweighs all odds.

Take the class. Go back to school. Apply for the new job. Quit your old one.

These are all challenges we face. These are our obstacles. Our mountains.

Sometimes they are just as scary; sometimes, it is only in our minds. Either way, the mountains must be conquered.

Now, grow.

Many of us feel overwhelmed, helpless, or frustrated when faced with obstacles. However, every obstacle we face can become an opportunity for growth if we embrace it and see it as a challenge instead. To do this, we must be present, look at the problem objectively, and assess what skills or resources we can draw on to get through it.

Self-confidence will carry you forward into future challenges that life brings your way.

Being sure of yourself, your capabilities and your abilities is essential to thriving and growing. A self-confident attitude will arm you with the courage, strength, and determination necessary to tackle any challenge that life presents in your path. It will help you to trust yourself more, take risks and make decisions without hesitation. Strong self-confidence also opens up many doors of opportunity that prepare you to face what’s ahead – whatever the future may bring – with power, ambition, and perseverance.

Be Proactive

No matter what challenges we face, we must take a proactive approach to deal with them. We must be determined and take the necessary steps to overcome our problems.

As I watched “Glass Onion,” the Netflix version of Agatha Christie’s Hercules Poirot, the protagonist Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, made one of the movie’s best lines. He said, “It is a dangerous thing to mistake speaking without thought for speaking the truth.”

We’ve all been there – say something at the moment that we later regret. But doing it without thinking can have more severe consequences than embarrassing ourselves. People often make careless comments without realizing the weight of their words. And in today’s society, with its 24-hour news cycles and social media platforms, those irresponsible remarks can quickly spiral out of control.

Leaders Pause

It is a leadership quality to think before you speak, as the dangers of speaking without thinking can be severe. It is crucial to be conscious of what we are saying and how our words may impact others. While there is sometimes no way to take back the comments we have already shared, self-awareness can help us recognize when it’s wiser to pause and reflect on what we are about to say rather than let impulsivity take control.

Leaders pause, think, reflect, and finally react. Or, in this case, speak.

It is also helpful to take time out whenever you feel overwhelmed with information or ideas racing through your mind – take a deep breath, inhale some fresh air outside if you can, and allow yourself to be in the moment for a few minutes before continuing the conversation. Most importantly, understand that taking moments of clarity can help you become an effective leader who communicates thoughtfully and expresses your opinions clearly.

Pausing is an underappreciated leadership skill, but it can make all the difference in effective communication. Leadership can become attainable by remaining committed to low levels of emotion and high levels of logic and rational thinking.

As I researched information for another book to write, I stumbled upon the above quote. After a few days, the quote stuck with me. It made more and more sense the longer it sat in my brain.

In today’s society, life is all about images and appearances. We are bombarded with constant visual stimulation, and it can be hard to escape the pressure to conform to societal standards. In a world where media and technology constantly surround us, we must take a step back and evaluate what is truly important to us. This quote from French sociologist Guy Debord sums up how our lives have become consumed by representations of reality rather than reality itself.

This quote speaks to how we now experience life in a society driven by technology and commerce. We live in an “accumulation of spectacles,” meaning that no matter what we do, it is always presented to us through a media platform or window dressing – mere appearances or illusions. We often mistake this facade for reality itself and forget that actual direct experience has been replaced with representations or images. This speaks to our lost genuine connections with our peers and environment, leading us toward disengagement and isolation instead.

Bombardment

Social media, television, and advertising are everywhere. In today’s society, these sources of communication attempt to shape our beliefs, create value systems and dictate social norms. We are surrounded by images and messages that can dictate how we look or think about ourselves, which can profoundly affect our sense of self-esteem. People should be aware of their ability to resist such messages. We need to recognize our autonomy when deciding what should influence us and develop our own beliefs independently of the avalanche of bombardment we experience daily.

I was teaching a leadership class and proposed to the class to look inward at where our value systems are created. I used the example of the television show, Survivor. It depicts constant deceit, manipulation, and backstabbing as the primary means to win. I asked, “If we watched the entire series without a break, would that change our value system?”

Sadly, it likely would.

We are consumed

We have become slaves, captives to the false realities that social media, pop culture, and other forms of media push onto us. Our lives have become delineated between real experiences and their misrepresentations presented in a shallow, distorted light. We spend all our time admiring this curated version of someone else’s life instead of creating unique stories. Between mindlessly scrolling through our feeds or comparing ourselves to others, we have forgotten how to live our own lives.

We obsess over posting the perfect picture and having the perfect caption. The perfect hashtag. It is the worst of the attention economy.

Step Back

Disconnecting from the messages we are constantly inundated with is critical for creating our realities. We must take a step back, pause and reflect on the information directed at us, and ensure that we can separate what we genuinely believe from what has been thrust upon us from outside sources. Reclaiming our ability to personalize the world around us is paramount, and it all starts with understanding how our influences have shaped our perspective. Until we do this, we are not in control – instead, we become passive pawns of those wishing to shape their narrative.

We are what we consume.

It honestly becomes that simple.

Surround yourself with good people, and become a better person.

To live a more meaningful and fulfilling life, one should make space for moments of reflection. This can be done by taking a walk in nature, engaging in conversations with people around us, or setting intentional times throughout the day when devices are turned off and you are aware of your senses. All these activities will help promote well-being, reduce stress levels and increase our capacity for joy. Investing time in these activities will lead to experiencing life more abundantly and deeply.

Reconnecting with whom we are meant to be.

Human beings must think and act independently to reach their fullest potential. We all need to recognize that taking the reins of our life allows us to have autonomy and strive for personal growth. When we become aware of our choices and are responsible for our decisions, we discover an inner strength that enables us to stay focused and achieve goals. Living life on one’s terms can be a liberating experience as it gives us power, control, and confidence to become whom we want to be.

We must recognize outside messages’ power in our lives and take steps to disconnect from them. When we do this, we can create our reality and live our own lives rather than being controlled by outside forces. We must live our own lives rather than letting others dictate how we should live.

We should stop comparing our social media lives to others. We should stop trying to keep up with the lives that other people portray on social media. Unplug, unwind and be a better person to be a good person. Not for the illusion of being a good person.

So how do you find your purpose? Some people believe that our purpose is written in the stars, while others think it comes from within us. Ultimately, there is no one correct answer; finding your purpose requires exploration and experimentation. For Aldrin, it was both.

Start exploring, be open-minded, and have faith in yourself – because there’s no doubt you have what it takes to live a life of meaning and fulfillment. This person can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and guide how to achieve your goals. By taking advantage of these resources, you can gain the clarity you need to succeed.

Even though he was ‘lucky’ and went to a school with an advanced computer program, it would be for nothing without hard work and patience.

No matter how we answer the question, it is essential to remember that the way we live our lives should reflect what matters most to us. If we live for ourselves, then our lives should be about selfish pursuits. If we live to serve others, our lives should be focused on giving back.

There are a lot of people that are anxious about their portrayals on social media. They are worried about what other people will think of them if they post too much or don’t post enough.

This way of living can be draining, and take away from our genuine connections with others. We might find ourselves comparing our lives to the lives we see on social media and feeling like we don’t measure up.

It’s important to remember that social media does not accurately portray reality. People only post the highlights of their lives, not the mundane day-to-day tasks that make up most of our lives. We shouldn’t compare our behind-the-scenes footage to someone else’s Hollywood production and feel bad about ourselves.

What’s the point?

We need be comfortable with ourselves. As we are, not the fake version. We need to live for ourselves, and act in ways that serve our personal moral and ethical needs. If we act solely for the benefit of image, we have missed the opportunity to be ourselves. IF we post the picture with the thought of “I wonder how many likes this will get?” We have lost before we have begun.

In Viktor Frankl’s writing, the topic of logotherapy is discussed. Within that framework, the concept of how we find meaning or purpose in our lives comes in three forms. The first is focused on actions creating meaning. This meaning comes from doing things, having experiences, and creating memories. It is the meaning we often think of when discussing living a full life.

While this is the least discussed, it is an important topic to examine further. It makes us question the entirety of our motivations for completing tasks – what could be more important than finding out why we’re doing what we’re doing?

The happiest people have a connection between their actions and their vision of society. More importantly, they can connect how their efforts improve the world. A person with this outlook can see their own life as valuable, and they are constantly reminded of the importance of their actions – they know that they’re not just going through the motions but making a real impact.

The concept of finding your meaning through actions is again taught in the fable of the three masons. The masons are each asked what they are doing.

The first says he is laying bricks, the second says he is building a wall, and the third says he is creating a cathedral.

The first two have a job to do, and they see their task as simply completing that job. The third mason has a higher purpose. He is building something that others will use, lasting long after he is gone.

The three masons provide a great example of how we can find meaning in our lives. The first two are Content with simply completing their task, while the third has a higher purpose and sees his actions as having a more significant meaning. This gives him a sense of satisfaction that the other two do not have.

Frankl is making the point that to have fulfillment, we must find the vision behind our actions. So, ask yourself, what is your vision? Are you a police officer? Have you lost sight of how important that job role has become? If so, remember that you are not just doing a job. You are fulfilling a higher purpose. Remember that what you are doing matters, and it is up to you to make it count.

It is no wonder that society is fighting over who supports the police. Society forgot for a while how vital that role is. Now we see rising murder rates, thefts, and violent crimes. While it may not always seem like it, the action of policing contributes to a better quality of life and society.

Find meaning in your every day. Put actions into vision. Be a beacon of hope to those around you.

Years ago, I stumbled upon a book titled Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers. Despite the fact that the book is primarily about fly-fishing, the title of the book has long since stuck with me.

The simple fact in life is that we need other people. We were not meant to live a life of solitude simply. In order to be the best versions of ourselves, we need a little help along the way.

That is why it is so important to surround yourself with a supportive network of family and friends. These are the people who will help you through the tough times and celebrate with you during the good times. But it doesn’t stop there. If there is anything I have learned in my professional career, it is that anything that needs to get done almost always relies upon knowing who the right person to call is.

Investment is the only way to guarantee the person on the other end will take your call. Investment in them, yourself, and the relationship between the two of you. All relationships require a give and take. At the end, keep the scorecard balanced in a way that you are always willing to give a little more than you take. When the balance begins to sway the other way, you become known as “the person who only calls when you need something.” That is not the type of person anyone wants to be.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed or like you can’t do something alone, remember that you don’t have to. There is always someone who is willing to help – you just have to be willing to ask for it. And when you are in a position to help someone else, do it with enthusiasm and without expecting anything in return.

In a recent survey, hundreds of high-performing upper management personnel were surveyed. The results were astounding. To stay mentally sharp, the high performers overwhelmingly chose activities that included an element of solitude.

Whether knowingly or not, the findings are consistent with zen philosophy. The goal of zen is to achieve a state of mind called “mushin,” which can be translated as “no mind.” This state is characterized by complete focus and concentration on the present moment. To achieve mushin, zen practitioners engage in activities that require complete focus and attention, such as meditation.

While the survey did not specifically ask about meditation, it’s clear that the respondents who reported the most significant mental productivity were those who had found a way to balance social and solitary activity in their lives.

Respondents reported participating in activities such as motorcycling, fly-fishing, and listening to music through headphones: no work e-mails, no phone calls, just themselves.

The key is to find an activity that allows you to focus entirely on the present moment without distractions. This could be anything from painting to hiking to playing a musical instrument. The important thing is that it’s something you enjoy and can do regularly.

We don’t discuss nearly enough how those rising costs affect society as a whole.

Rising healthcare costs don’t just make it difficult for people to afford health care. They also make it difficult for businesses to afford to offer health insurance to their employees.

Supply and Demand of Healthcare

The typical fix for the rising healthcare costs is to give more free or subsidized access to lower-income earners. This helps to ameliorate the effects on society but does little to fix the healthcare system itself.

The number of providers limits the healthcare system itself. Given the length of schooling and economic barriers to attending education, the system has an excess demand. The system was not created to handle the number of people trying to use it.

This is where student loan forgiveness comes in.

If we re-think the healthcare model of dumping money into the demand side (ultimately driving up prices for all users) and focus on the supply side, we might be able to achieve something. By increasing providers, increasing medical facilities, and reducing barriers to becoming a healthcare provider, we would allow the market to correct itself.

The economics of a functioning society is tricky, but at their heart, they are about creating an environment where people can prosper.

Forgiving student loan debt would be a way to increase the number of healthcare providers and reduce the overall cost of healthcare.

The same argument could be made for pilots. This year (2022), Travelers have been bombarded with cancellations of flights leaving passengers stranded or vacations canceled.

The problem is a lack of pilots. Many people are critical of the airlines calling on them to hire more pilots. But it isn’t that simple. Becoming an airline pilot is a long and arduous process requiring time and money.

Pilot training is expensive.

Again, student loan forgiveness could be a way to increase the number of pilots and reduce the overall cost of travel.

The same argument can be made for other professions in high demand but with high entry barriers.

Economics of Student Debt

Proponents of student loan forgiveness argue that it will stimulate the economy by freeing up money for people to spend on other things. This is based on the theory of Keynesian economics, which says that consumer spending is the key driver of economic growth. By forgiving $10,000 in student loans, the thinking goes, borrowers will have more money to spend on other things, which will spur economic growth.

Critics of this argument point out that the vast majority of people with student loans are not in a position to make significant purchases like a house or a car. In addition, the money that would be freed up by loan forgiveness is not likely to be spent immediately, but would instead be saved or used to pay down other debts.

Odd Timing

The timing of the announcement is curious. The same day the announcement was made, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell made a speech highlighting the need to keep interest rates high. The rationale was to curb inflation. Hence the odd timing. Suppose excess cash in an economy is driving up inflation. In that case, the Federal Reserve’s move to increase interest rates is a move to slow spending and reduce the amount of money in an economy. So, on the one hand, the government is announcing a policy to put more cash in Americans’ hands via student loan forgiveness. On the other hand, the Federal Reserve is trying to take away some of that cash by increasing interest rates.

The opposing financial policies could have interesting implications. If the Fed’s policy successfully slows economic growth, it could offset any stimulus effect of the student loan forgiveness. On the other hand, if the Fed’s policy fails and inflation does pick up, the extra cash from loan forgiveness could exacerbate the problem.

The announcement’s timing comes less than three months before the midterm elections. Some have accused the administration of trying to buy votes with this policy. It’s impossible to know the motivations behind the timing of the announcement. However, it is worth noting that this is not the first time a significant policy announcement has been made close to an election.

On Motivation and Productivity

When it comes to getting things done, there seems to be a sweet spot for timing. You want to be productive, but you don’t want to overdo it and feel burned out. So what’s the right balance? How do you know when you’re in the zone?

Do feelings predicate action? We typically think that we are motivated when we FEEL like doing something. We feel like working out, so we are motivated to go to the gym. We feel like eating healthy and losing ten pounds. We feel like connecting with an old friend, so we call them.

What if the algorithm is wrong? What if doing predicates feelings?

In other words, take action first, and the motivation and feelings will follow. It’s the same reason we tell people struggling with depression to “fake it ’til you make it.” When we do things that make us happy, we USUALLY feel happier as a result. The problem is that when we’re depressed, it’s hard to do something that make us happy. That’s where the “faking it” comes in.

Theory: Doing something — anything — will eventually lead to a feeling of motivation. As long as you get started, the motivation will come.

This theory can be broken down into two parts:

1) Doing begets doing.

2) Feeling begets feeling.

Laws of inertia

When it comes to getting things done, the best way to get started is to start. Once you’re in motion, it’s much easier to keep going. And as you keep going, you’ll find that your motivation will begin to build. The same is true of feelings. When we take action and do something, we often find that our feelings start to change. We may not feel like working out at first, but after doing it for a while, we may see that our attitude has changed, and we enjoy it now.

If you want to be more productive and get things done, the best way to do it is to start. If you want to feel like going to the gym, go to the gym. The results you see will likely motivate you to come back again.

One way to control your time is to set a daily routine and stick to it. This will help you structure your day and make the most of your time.

Another way to be more productive is to batch similar tasks together. This means doing all of your errands at once or tackling all of your emails in one sitting. Batching can help you save time by eliminating the need to switch gears between different tasks.

You can also try setting a timer for yourself to help you stay focused on a task. Once the timer goes off, you can take a break or move on to something else. This can help you stay on track and avoid getting overwhelmed by a project.

And finally, remember that it’s okay to say no sometimes. You don’t have to do everything that’s asked of you.

Confidence Following Tragedy

Confidence has its roots in a Latin word. It is derived from confidentia, which means “to be bold” or “to have faith in.” In English, it was first used in the 1500s, and it means “a feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something.” Confidence is a crucial ingredient in success. It allows people to take risks and achieve their goals. Confident people tend to be happier and more successful than those who are not.

Confidence, unfortunately, has been used against successful people. People who are not confident will often try to bring others down to feel better about themselves. This is known as “sowing seeds of doubt.” However, confidence cannot be destroyed. It is a quality that comes from within and cannot be taken away. No matter what someone says or does, confidence will always exist. It is up to the individual to find and nurture it.

So, what is wrong with having trust in oneself? Plenty to an insecure person. Their ‘confidence’ borders on narcissism and is nothing more than a mask to hide feelings of inadequacy.

Insecurity is a virus that eats away at our confidence, making us question everything we do. It can make us shy away from opportunities and prevent us from achieving our goals. Insecurity can also cause us to doubt ourselves and our abilities.

A lack of self-esteem or self-worth often causes insecurity. This can be due to a number of factors, such as childhood experiences, bullying, or negative comments from others. If you are struggling with insecurity, it is essential to address the root cause. For first responders, self-confidence is key to success on the job. For individuals in a public safety profession, confidence can be the difference between life in death and a high-stress situation.

Unfortunately, confidence can be the first to escape our mental resilience arsenal following a traumatic event. Studies have shown that first responders who experience PTSD or other mental health conditions are more likely to suffer from low self-confidence. So, how can we build and maintain confidence following a traumatic event?

Acknowledge your feelings:

It is normal to feel scared, sad, or angry after a traumatic event. Give yourself time to process what happened. Most departments have debriefs or after-action reviews to process events. Do this at the individual level and be prepared to be open and honest with yourself.

Seek professional help:

A therapist can help you work through your feelings and develop healthy coping mechanisms. One of our goals at Frontline Freedom is to break the stigma associated with mental health. Remember, you are not broken. You are not an object. You are a human being. Human beings are social creatures. Talking is important. Talking to trained people on the best practices is even more critical.

Challenge negative thoughts:

Our thoughts influence our emotions and behavior. If you constantly think negative thoughts, it will be challenging to feel confident. Pay attention to your self-talk and challenge any unhelpful thoughts. Take the time to analyze each thought and ask yourself if it seems logical. We tend to catastrophize, which is a form of cognitive distortion.

Practice self-care:

Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally is crucial for maintaining confidence. Make sure to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and get plenty of rest. When you don’t feel like doing something, that is the exact time to force yourself to act. There is a misconception that feelings drive actions. Motivation does not work that way. Actions drive feelings. If we aren’t motivated to eat right and exercise, we will likely wait around for the feelings of motivation to fix it for us. However, if we force ourselves to do those things, typically, the motivation to continue follows shortly after that.

Practice self-compassion.

It is ok not to be ok. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Celebrate your accomplishments.

We take things for granted sometimes. Simply walking into a restaurant may trigger us following a traumatic event. When you recognize that you can do things without thinking of them again, pause and take time to express self-gratitude. These are the signs that you are progressing.

Surround yourself with positive people.

We all need good influences. If we don’t surround ourselves with positive people, we cannot expect a positive result in life.

Above all else, trust.

Trust in yourself and your abilities. One of the first things in life taken from us following a tragedy is our confidence. Simply put, we stop trusting ourselves. We second guess everything. We get anxiety over the decisions we make. We listen to the doubts of those around us. What does that mean for our ability to live a full life?

It means we have to put in twice the effort. It means relearning how to trust not only ourselves but also the process. Trust that things will work out even when we can’t see how they could. Trust that we have what it takes to overcome any obstacle. Trust that we are capable of so much more than we think.

Start with trusting yourself enough to do the things you usually avoid because of a lack of confidence. If you’re afraid to speak in public, give a presentation. If you’re scared to try something new, sign up for a class. These small steps will build your confidence over time, and eventually, you’ll be able to do the things that once seemed impossible.

When we trust ourselves, our confidence grows. And with that growth comes a more positive outlook on life. We become less reactive and more proactive. We let go of the need to be perfect and learn to embrace our mistakes. We focus on what we can control and let go of the things we can’t. Most importantly, we learn to live in the present moment.

Many addicts report dreaming about playing their favorite games when it comes to video game dreams. These dreams are often very vivid and can provide a sense of satisfaction that the addict may lack in real life. Dreams about video games can also help the addict work through any problems they may be facing in their life. For example, if an addict has trouble with a certain level in a game, they may dream about beating that level and resolving the issue.

While dreaming about games may not be bad at face value, it shows us that our minds are attached to the games we play even when we are not playing them.

How do you feel when you are not playing video games?

There is a difference between simply enjoying your hobby and having an addiction. Addicts often find themselves lost without their drug of choice. Not only does this person neglect their duties or responsibilities for their gaming, but they also become anxious or irritable. Are you constantly thinking about playing when you should be focused on family, work, or other activities?

How much time do you spend with family or friends?

Involvement with video games can take away from personal relationships. It is important to maintain both to have a healthy outlook on life. The most pervasive myth about the social consequences of video game playing is that it creates anti-social personalities. People who play video games excessively are not necessarily anti-social; they simply need to limit their gaming time to maintain healthy relationships.

A lack of attention and care for loved ones or a complete disregard for household rules or responsibilities could be due to excessive time spent playing games. Someone with an addiction will not make time for friends and family because they prefer to stay home and play video games than go out with others. Family members may feel like they are becoming replaced since their loved ones would rather play games than spend quality time together. Even though individuals may say they are trying to get better, they could just be lying so that others do not leave them. This behavior can cause stress on the family members left at home.

The second negative impact on relationships is that it affects one’s mood. Video game addiction can cause someone to feel very isolated. When someone feels isolated, they are more likely to become depressed and even contemplate suicide. Since psychological issues are frequently linked with video game addiction, some patients undergo counseling for both their video game addiction and their mental health issue(s). Although this may not directly affect one’s relationship, if a person neglects other areas in his life such as school or work, this could create a rift between those around him or her.

Life is about balance. I’m not advocating for not playing video games. That would be hypocritical as I enjoy numerous hobbies. Find a balance between games and other areas of your life. Meet friends. Spend time with family or significant others. Play games, but also do something productive.

Give yourself goals for what you want to accomplish during the day. Maybe these goals are not things that directly benefit you right now but could be things that will help you in the future. Or maybe you want to read a book or two. Whatever you do, do it with balance.

Relationships

Relationships are about the quality of time you spend with other people in your life, whether that’s a partner, spouse or family member, friend, colleague, or anyone else you enjoy spending time with. It doesn’t matter how long you have known them for either. The important thing is that you have people in your life that are good for you, care about you, and who you enjoy being around. If this isn’t something that comes easily to you, if there are many people in your life but no one really stands out as unique, then it might be time to start thinking about making some new friends or investing more time in your existing relationships. And suppose you don’t have as many people as you’d like in your life. In that case, it might be time to look at opportunities for meeting new people and expanding your social circle. Relationship questions:

Do I know the names of all my neighbors?

Do I have a best friend or group of close friends that I enjoy spending time with?

Do I have at least one person to whom I can say anything without fear of judgment or consequences?

Health and Fitness

If you keep up a healthy lifestyle and eat well, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly, then your physical well-being will improve. This means you will have more energy, be less prone to illness and generally feel better about yourself. If this isn’t something that comes naturally to you, or if it’s been a long time since you’ve looked after your health, then perhaps now is the time for some basic improvements. Start with small changes – eat healthier or start exercising – and build up from there. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Health and fitness questions:

Do I exercise regularly?

Do I eat healthy foods most of the time?

If you answered no to those, then it might be time to take another look at your lifestyle and ask yourself if there’s anything you can do to make things even better.

Career and Finance

This is about how you feel about your job, as well as whether or not you earn enough money to meet all your needs and those of people close to you. If you like what you do for a living and feel confident in your abilities, then it’s likely you’ll be happy with your job. If this isn’t the case, if you would like to make a change or even start your own business, now might be the right time. And if you’re lacking in confidence and don’t feel as though your work is valued, then it’s time to focus on building skills and gaining experience that will allow you to take a more confident, proactive stance at work. Finally, if you’re unhappy with your financial situation and feel as though your job isn’t providing enough money to meet all your needs, it might be time for a change or even a new career. Do I earn enough money to cover all my needs and the needs of people close to me?

Is it time for a career change or at least some further education to boost earning power? If you answered no to any of these questions, then your attention should be focused on working towards positive changes in this area.

Value Systems

Value systems are an often overlooked area of our lives. Where we get our values and, more importantly, how we can improve them are essential to our overall success. While there are many different value systems, we often only think about our personal ones.

Our family, friends, and community all play a role in shaping our values. However, we also have to be careful not to let others control us. We need to find our voice and figure out what’s important to us. This can be a difficult task, but it’s worth it in the end.

Once we know our values, we need to start living by them. This doesn’t mean that we have to be perfect, but it does mean that we need to try our best. We also need to be aware of our surroundings and how they might influence us. It’s not always easy to stay true to our values, but it’s worth it in the end.

When we live by our values, we’re happier and more fulfilled. We know who we are and what we stand for. We also have a sense of direction in our lives, which is essential.

Bottom line; we are what we consume. If we constantly scroll social media, we become the content we scroll. If we watch argumentative television, we become confrontational.

Self-Improvement

The final category is self-improvement. This is about doing the things that make you feel good, improve your life and help you grow as a person. It’s about finding fulfillment in what you do. If this isn’t something that comes naturally to you, if there are aspects of your character and personality that you’d like to change and develop, it might be time for a bit of personal development. And if you feel as though your life lacks meaning or purpose, perhaps the source of this problem is in how you choose to spend your time. Consider what positive changes would make a significant difference in your life and go from there. Self-improvement questions:

Do I make time for things that enrich my life?

What would be different if I spent more time doing what makes me happy and fulfilled?

If you answered no to the first question and are stumped on the second of those, then here are a few ideas to get you started. Identify one thing you could do every day that would add value to your life and take steps towards making that happen.

Consider what positive changes would make a significant difference in your life and go from there. Whether it’s about career, finance, or self-improvement, the key is not making excuses for where you are but taking actionable steps towards improvement today.

How we become unhappy.

The unhappiness we feel didn’t start overnight. It began long ago, back to when we were children. Long before any of us could have imagined where we are today…


Back then, it was the oppressive adults who held all the cards. And they laid them on the table for their kids, just one at a time. Rules, homework, chores. These are mine! That’s yours! You can’t have it until you are done! No, you can’t go out and play until you finish your work.


We wanted to call the shots. We tried to make the decisions. And then, we were thrust into the world of options. As soon as we are barely old enough to drive, we start making a long-range plan. Do we go to college? Do we join the workforce? If we decide to go to college, what for? What classes should I take? What career am I after? The list goes on.
Each time we make a decision, we force the decision of another. Our choices are interlinked with one another. If I choose to take the chemistry class, I must sacrifice music theory. And so our lives go. Boiling down to a series of choices. Each with its own unique consequences and sacrifices.


We hit a point in our lives where we start to question our choices. We come to the realization that there are trade-offs to each action. We had to sacrifice important things in our life to get to where we are today. Now, we begin to question whether our choices were the right decisions for ourselves. Think of it this way, have you ever described or thought of someone as “the one that got away.”? This is just one example of how your choices today can affect your entire life.


Is it possible to go back in time and change a decision that negatively affected your life? As humans, we become obsessed with looking back at our life choices and thinking of how different life would be if we went back in time. When we think about it, our ability to travel through time has been an ongoing theme in fiction books, movies, and various other forms of media.
That line of thinking directly impacts our current happiness. The older we get, the more difficult it is to let go of our past. It seems as though each year, the desire for time travel or having your younger self make better decisions grows even stronger. We begin to lose our youthful spirit and seek out any way possible to revert back to that state.


We question things because there is a finite number of choices anyone can make in a lifetime. The world is too big a place to do everything we are interested in doing. I can’t have a career and try to devote hours of practice to a piano to play in the world’s most renowned theatres.

I also can’t devote hours of practice to become an astronomer when I already have a full-time job. As we age, our interests change, and thus the decisions we make will change. We are in control of what decisions we make but not necessarily in control of how they will affect us in the long run.


Unfortunately, when we think of the decisions we could have made, we tend to think of the best-case scenario for the outcomes. For instance, if we think about the option we had in our youth to apply ourselves and become a doctor, we often imagine a fancy lifestyle that accompanies it. We don’t think about the hours of hard work to see patients each week. We don’t see continual research to keep our skills sharp.


In another example, we may think about how we should have stuck with photography. We imagine ourselves as National Geographic photographers, living life as an adventurer. We don’t see a lack of income if our pictures don’t sell. We don’t see the hours spent away from family. Most importantly, we forget that chasing that lifestyle negates all of our current family and friends.


We are trying to make that we humans don’t like to think about the bad parts of life. We only think of the good aspects and tend to gloss over all negative ones. This isn’t exactly helping us when we begin thinking about how our decisions could have been different.


As humans, we are biased towards thinking about our futures. This is why when we think about our past, we decide on what changes we should have made that impact our current and future lives. Philosopher Derek Parfit used a story about a time machine to help us mentally solve this dilemma.


He would tell people to imagine a machine that could take you back to the past. Whenever you wanted, for as long as you wanted, and with no cost or consequences. Would you use it? Most people would say yes because they tend to think of all the good things they could do.


However, if you think about it deeper, this isn’t a good idea. You would essentially live two lives with no guarantees that the second one would have a different outcome than the first.


Just because we had a bad day at work doesn’t mean that line of thinking can be applied to every other moment in our lives. If we let one wrong decision ruin the rest of our lives, then we have genuinely wasted our lives. This is why we should stop living in the past and move forward while looking at our decisions objectively. Unfortunately, I have seen too many people get fed up after a bad day at the office and altogether leave their profession. Now they spend all of their time reminiscing about the good times and what could have been had that one day never happened.


We need to accept that we will make bad decisions but also realize that we shouldn’t think about them constantly. It’s more essential for us to focus on what can be done in the present moment instead of incessantly thinking about all of the good decisions we could have made in the past.

What is Catastrophizing and why it is making you miserable?

Cognitive distortion theory is a branch of psychology that deals with the way people think about and interpret situations. It was developed in the 1960s by Dr. Aaron Beck and has been expanded on by other researchers. Catastrophizing is one of the cognitive distortions that can occur when dealing with a difficult situation. This happens when a person takes an adverse event or situation and blows it out of proportion, imagining all sorts of terrible things that could occur as a result.

Catastrophizing refers to the magnifying events into disasters that cannot be tolerated. For example, suppose you think that something like public speaking will lead to your becoming wholly humiliated and embarrassed. In that case, you are catastrophizing about what is likely to happen. When catastrophizing occurs, you are more likely to become anxious about what is happening or avoid doing things that involve the situation. For example, if you think some mild illness means you will be bedridden for a week and lose your job, then the illness may lead to anxiety and depression.

How to Recognize Catastrophizing In Yourself

Catastrophizing is often related to how you interpret situations. Often, people who catastrophize expect extreme outcomes in a situation when something wrong happens. For example, suppose someone bumps into you in a crowded room and does not apologize. In that case, you might think that they are “intentionally trying to make your life miserable” or that the person is “out to get you.” Catastrophizing often feeds the belief that a situation is horrible and unbearable, leading to feelings of anxiety.

One strategy for dealing with catastrophizing is identifying it when it occurs. You can ask yourself some questions if you think you might be catastrophizing:

(a) What is the worst possible thing that could happen?

(b) How likely is it to actually happen?

By doing this, you can make an objective prediction about what will happen. You may find out that it’s unlikely for something terrible to actually occur, and by realizing this, you’ll feel less anxious.

What does Catastrophizing Look Like?

A person thinking about starting their own business might catastrophize about the potential failure and risk of bankruptcy. Someone making plans with someone they like might catastrophize that if the person doesn’t show up for their date, or if the person cancels, they don’t want them anymore. Someone thinking about asking their boss for a promotion might catastrophize that their boss will say no and that they will be “stuck in this awful job forever.”

Catastrophizing can also occur when someone experiences a traumatic event. For example, a police officer who has witnessed the death of another person might catastrophize that they could have done something to prevent what happened or that it’s their fault. Someone who has experienced a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or an earthquake, might catastrophize that another event like this will occur again and lead to destruction. This is where anxiety is born. We have experienced a bad situation in the past. Our minds allow us to assume events will always be harmful in the future.

In interpersonal relationships, catastrophizing can also take the form of negative beliefs about yourself or someone else. For example, have you ever been left on read? When someone doesn’t respond to a text or a phone call, you might catastrophize that they are angry with you or don’t want to talk to you. Quite simply, the other person may have just been busy. People who have experienced an unfaithful partner may assume future romantic interests are cheating on them when they fail to immediately respond.

How To Handle Catastrophizing

Identify when catastrophizing is occurring: consider asking yourself, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” and “How likely is it to actually happen?” Challenge yourself to come up with an alternative explanation. For example, if you think your partner doesn’t like you because they did not respond immediately after a date, consider asking them why they didn’t reply.

Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation. Sometimes these thoughts can appear when you feel overwhelmed or stressed, and reducing your anxiety will help counteract the thinking style before it spirals into a negative cycle of catastrophizing and further anxiety. Use behavioral experiments to test out the validity of your belief that something terrible will happen. Try doing something, and if the worst possible thing happens, practice accepting it. For example, you can tell yourself that you will be okay if your boss says no to your promotion request.

Change Your Focus

Think about how things could go well instead of focusing on the worst-case scenario. For example, “there’s a chance I might get this promotion, and if not, there are other opportunities out there.” Tell yourself that bad things could happen but that you can cope. For example, “It’s a possibility my boss will say no to my request for a promotion, but if she does, it doesn’t mean I’m going to quit my job.

Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, get adequate sleep, do things you enjoy, and learn how to be resilient. If something wrong happens, have an optimistic approach. Try to look at the situation from other perspectives or find the silver lining. Make time for activities that are meaningful to you. It is important to remember that although catastrophizing can feel like it is helping you cope with difficult situations, it isn’t. Try to find more effective coping strategies by speaking to a therapist or taking up mindfulness meditation if the issue persists.

It is normal to think catastrophically in certain situations. Still, suppose your negative thinking is so overwhelming that it interferes with your daily life and makes you unable to manage the situation effectively on your own. In that case, it is time to seek professional help.

Cognitive restructuring is an effective way to change your thinking style and reduce anxiety while catastrophizing. As we mentioned above, it makes anxiety worse and does not allow you to find solutions to the problem at hand.

Many cognitive behavioral therapy techniques can help you manage your negative thoughts and catastrophizing. Still, it is essential to know that the effects of therapy are long-lasting. This is because it changes how you think, not just how you act.

For some, catastrophizing is a common and normal thought process. But for others, it can be so overwhelming that they cannot manage the situation at hand on their own. If you find yourself in this position, then seek professional help as soon as possible with cognitive behavioral therapy techniques such as Cognitive Restructuring or Mindfulness Meditation. These will allow you to change your thinking style and reduce anxiety while also providing long-lasting effects because of how these therapies work, changing not just how you act but how you think about things too!

How Backpacking Saved Me, Again.

Anyone who has followed my personal journey knows that the non-profit Frontline Freedom was started out of need. I needed to escape. I needed to escape my own thoughts, struggles, emotions. I needed to escape and stay healthy.


I could have chosen to hit the bottle. That wasn’t for me. In fact, the best advice I ever received was more of a reminder. Alcohol was for celebrations. Not for sadness. Never drink when you’re sad, lonely, or depressed. Only drink to celebrate. Only drink to toast others for their accomplishments.


Enter the inner outdoorsman.


When I was a kid, I had an obsession with camping gear. I loved tents, cooking sets, and building fires from nothing. As I got older, my obsessions stayed with me. I bought all of the backpacking gear I could afford. Only, I didn’t backpack. I put all of my gear in a motorcycle and would take weekend trips, camping wherever I could find somewhere open for the night.


As life hit and I felt alone, I ran into Josh. We started taking backpacking trips and developed what would become Frontline Freedom. Things were going great. I was happy, healthy, and helping others in the process.


Then life hit me again. As it tends to do so unexpectedly.


I received a frantic phone call from my aunt. I could hear my dad screaming in the background. My heart sank.
My aunt said, “David, your brother is dead. He killed himself. He’s gone.”


It was December 1. Just a few days after thanksgiving. I never got to say goodbye. In the ensuing chaos that consumed my family, I did what I always do. I hid my emotions and tried to stay strong for everyone else. I offered encouragement and tried to help people understand that they would never fully understand. We cried, we laughed at old stories, and we wondered why.


Fast forward to four months later.


My mom called me. She was crying on the other end of the phone. “It’s bad, Dave. I need you.” Once again, the surge of adrenaline through my veins made me feel numb as I prepared for her following words. “Michael is dead.”


Michael was my step-brother. We came of age together and became adults at the same time. He was a good man who always provided for his family. Years prior, he became a victim of prescription pills, which turned to heroin use. He fought his demons in and out of rehab. Addiction is an odd thing. He never wanted to be addicted, but the disease overcame him.
He died of an overdose before leaving for work.


Once again, the family was in a state of mourning.


My younger brother, Ryan, was struggling with all of it. I was too. Yet, I again hid my emotions and tried to be the comforter to everyone else.


Luckily, Frontline Freedom had a trip planned between Michael’s death and his funeral. I told my brother, Ryan, that he needed to be on that trip with me. As we tend to do so, we went to Grayson Highlands and backpacked.


I remember looking over a ridge and wondering how to make sense of everything. Here was all the beauty of nature, and I couldn’t help but think that my two brothers would never see sunset again. They would never feel the rush of cool air on their faces again. I looked at Ryan as he watched the sunset over the ridge, and I could see the same look in him.


While I may have been in a sad place, the woods did something for me. It did the same thing it had done when I was a kid and again as an adult just four years prior. They gave me perspective. They gave me a chance to talk to the people on the trip. They allowed me to feel.


Sometimes, we lose feeling. Sometimes, that numbness we feel when we brace for bad news never goes away. Backpacking amid all that turmoil gave me back what I had lost. It gave me feelings, emotions, and, most importantly, safety.


I’ll admit it. I tend not to be a vulnerable man. I fall victim to some sort of never-showing ‘weakness’ mentality. That’s wrong. Weakness is not allowing yourself to heal. Weakness is not showing others that you’re a human.


Backpacking gave me the ability to share. Sharing brings vulnerability yet, courage. Strength comes from sharing. Power comes from admitting that sometimes the people who are always there for other people do, in fact, need people for themselves as well.


That trip was the perfect trip at the ideal time.


I am stronger for going and continue to be stronger today from the lessons I learned while on a trail.

How your sleep impacts anxiety

How Sleep Impacts Your Anxiety Levels

Most people know that getting a good night’s sleep is essential, but many don’t realize how closely linked sleep and anxiety are. In fact, there is a strong correlation between the amount of sleep you get and the severity of your anxiety symptoms.

The reason why is because your body releases serotonin while you sleep. Serotonin is the neurochemical in the brain that regulates anxiety levels, so when you get enough hours of quality sleep, your serotonin levels are higher than if you do not get enough sleep.

On the other hand, if your serotonin levels are low, it will be challenging to stop anxiety. There are exceptions, of course, but this is typically the case. So while it may seem difficult to believe that something as simple as getting enough sleep can have an impact on your anxiety levels, it’s actually very accurate. Getting at least 6 hours of high-quality sleep each night can help to decrease your anxiety.

But it’s not as simple as that. To fully understand how to best use sleep to your advantage, you need to know the different types of sleep and what they do for you.

The sleep cycles

 Throughout the night, your brain goes through different sleep cycles. Each cycle is about 90 minutes long, and each one brings you closer to being asleep.

Non-REM is a deep, dreamless state that most people experience only a few times each night. It plays a vital role in helping your body recover from stress and build new cells, including those responsible for learning and memory. The non–REM cycle is where you have more profound and slower brain waves and decreased blood flow to the brain. On average, this type of sleep comprises about 75% of total sleep time.

REM – is a stage of sleep during which your eyes move rapidly, and you have dreams. When you experience your typical four or five REM cycles per night, each typically lasts from 10 to 30 minutes.

The amount of time spent in different stages of sleep can vary from night to night for any individual. However, suppose one consistently spends less than an hour in slow-wave sleep. In that case, they are probably not getting enough restorative rest with their current sleeping schedule. For this type of essential recovery to take place, it is critical to allocate at least six hours for a regular sleep period in addition to allowing the body sufficient time for going through all four stages before waking up.

Healthy sleep habits

Some healthy sleep habits you can use to ensure you are getting the best sleep are:

– Avoid caffeine at least six hours before your regular bedtime.

– Exercise during the day instead of just before you go to bed. The rise and fall of body temperature from exercise can interfere with sleep quality.

– Limit your alcohol intake as it leads to fragmented sleep and frequent awakenings throughout the night.

– Avoid checking your phone or watching TV in bed as these activities can interfere with sleep quality.

– Find a sleeping pattern that is best for you and stick with it (fall asleep around the same time every night).

Habits like these can help your body create an internal “sleep clock” that is more in tune with when you need to sleep. On average, adults should try to get at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep each night; however, an average of seven to nine hours is recommended for anyone who is trying to recover from anxiety. 

Suppose your anxiety symptoms occur during the day. In that case, it can increase nighttime stress levels and interfere with your ability to fall asleep. The less you can rest properly, the harder it will be to function during the day and overcome your anxiety.

Suppose you are struggling to get good quality sleep. In that case, it may increase your anxiety, which can lead to further insomnia, creating a vicious cycle. Remember, some people with anxiety can struggle to fall asleep due to elevated stress levels.

This makes it essential to discover what is keeping you up at night so you can begin dealing with the root cause instead of allowing your anxiety to escalate further.

Suppose you have trouble falling asleep or become dependent on sleep aids. In that case, it may be time to chat with a therapist about whether an alternative strategy would work better for you.

Having difficulties sleeping can be frustrating if you are trying to heal from anxiety. Think of restful sleep as your number one ally in the fight against your panic disorder. It will help decrease overall anxiety, but it is also crucial for long-term health and wellness. By maintaining good sleeping habits and getting proper sleep regularly, you will experience a more restful and productive day.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, don’t despair. Healthy sleep habits and a regular routine can help your body establish an internal “sleep clock” that’s better in tune with when it needs to be resting. Practices like these will lead to more restful nights and promote higher levels of productivity during the day for those who have difficulty managing their anxiety symptoms, which may occur during daylight hours due to elevated stress levels.

I suggest tracking your sleep with a good old-fashioned pen and paper or using a smartwatch. You can help uncover patterns in your sleep patterns and get yourself on the path to correcting your sleep hygiene.

Consistency is Key

Like anything, consistency is key. Healthy sleep habits are dependent upon a routine. Apple iPhones have a bedtime reminder (what I personally use). Each time it goes off, I stop what I’m doing, brush my teeth, and go to bed. Starting this routine has helped me decrease the number of weird dreams I have (you know, the one all cops have about trying to pull a trigger and can’t). Additionally, I feel more restorative when I get up.

The other thing I do is keep my alarm set for each and every day. Even on weekends, I’m up by 0530. After a couple of months, I really don’t need an alarm anymore.

It’s essential to stick to a regular sleep schedule, avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed, and get up at the same time each day. Creating a Conscious Mindset: A Key to Success

Most people operate on autopilot most of the time. They go through the motions of their day, doing what they’re supposed to do and not thinking about it too much. This is especially true when it comes to working. We all know that if we just do what we’re told and don’t think too hard about it, things will go more smoothly.

But this mindless approach can also lead to stagnation and boredom. If you never challenge yourself and push your boundaries, you’ll never grow as an individual. You need to be willing to experiment with new ideas and ways of thinking, even if they make you uncomfortable. By having a conscious mindset, you can take control of your own development and genuinely start to live the life you want.

To have a conscious mindset, you need to know your mindset. You need to be aware of the thoughts and ideas going through your head daily. This awareness can open up a whole new world of possibilities for yourself. The more conscious you are, the more you’ll realize how much control you have over yourself and the situations you are presented with.

What is the conscious mindset?

So what does it mean to have a conscious mindset? It involves actively examining situations that seem familiar, recognizing patterns of thought and behavior that might be holding you back, and making a conscious effort to change things. In essence, it’s all about choosing how you respond to stimuli – both physical and mental – that come into your life.

Part of having a conscious mindset is also recognizing when you’re not acting consciously. Most of us tend to revert to autopilot mode after a long day at work or school. If your mind tends to wander to other things when you’re supposed to be focused on the task at hand, this is a sign that you need to make an effort to stay in the moment.

What are the benefits of having a conscious mindset?

Being conscious also entails being aware of your own thoughts and feelings. If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts about a person or situation repeatedly, stop yourself. See the thought, and choose to let it go. This frees up mental space for more empowering thoughts.

Being conscious can help you connect with other people on a deeper level. Let’s spend time focusing on ourselves and what is happening inside of us every day. We become more attuned to our own feelings, desires, and needs. When we understand ourselves, we become more accepting of the people around us. We can then speak from a place of empathy and understanding rather than reacting from a place of fear or anger.

When you have clear intentions for what you want in life, it becomes much easier to stop wasting time and energy on the things you don’t want. You become more driven toward your goals and end up taking better care of yourself because you’re living a life that is right for you.

You may find that some changes could be made in how you think or behave right now, especially if any of your current beliefs are not helpful to you. Third, come up with a plan for putting those new changes into place. Deciding to make a few adjustments will not help if you don’t create a specific action plan to back up that intention. You should detail exactly what you need to do and in what order so that it becomes easier for you to visualize your desired outcome.

You can also employ other tactics while trying to achieve this mindset change, such as taking time out of each day to sit quietly and think about what you have done so far or what you would like to change about your current daily routine. You could also maintain a journal where you write down any personal insights that come to light during this time of introspection.

The conscious mindset is not always easy to achieve. Still, it can be accomplished relatively quickly and easily with some effort and regular practice.

What challenges do you face when trying to live more consciously??

The biggest challenge is getting out of autopilot. We all have automatic responses, some helpful and others unhelpful. When we go on autopilot, we tend to default to our less useful patterns and stories because they’re what we’re used to. Often we don’t even realize this is happening, mainly if it’s a pattern we live by for many years. To be more conscious, I need to notice when I’m on autopilot to get back into my conscious mindset.

How can you overcome these challenges?

When we start to practice noticing when we’re on autopilot and becoming more aware of our patterns, we gradually begin to see them in action all the time. It’s then that we have a chance to start consciously challenging these patterns instead of following them blindly, or worse still – without knowing what is going on. The best way to do this is with the help of mindfulness practices such as meditation and everyday mindfulness.

The most effective way for me is to take one small step at a time. It doesn’t work if I try to do too much or too drastically because my brain goes into panic mode and stops thinking clearly. One step at a time helps the brain relax. Always aim high but start small!

How to stay mindful/conscious?

My favorite way to stay conscious is by setting intentions for the day. My second tip would be to practice mindfulness throughout the day, which can be as simple as taking one deep breath, noticing a flower out of the corner of your eye, or hearing the wind in the trees. If you do this throughout the day, you’ll find your mind starts to relax, and it becomes easier to come back to this mindset.

We have all heard about resiliency to help with our mental health. But, what exactly is resiliency? And more importantly, how do we become more resilient? In this post, we will dive into how to build a mental resiliency plan.

What Is Resiliency?

Resilience is defined as a biological or psychological ability to cope with stress. It also includes the capacity to maintain a healthy emotional state when faced with challenges and adverse conditions. When we talk about resiliency in mental health, we are often talking about the second part of that definition, the capacity to maintain a healthy emotional state.

Resilience is how we cope emotionally with challenges and hardships. So, the bigger question becomes, how do we make ourselves more mentally resilient?

Many things can make us more resilient, but mental health professionals agree on some of the most important ones. Here are four key ways to help improve mental resilience:

1. Optimism

The first way mental health professionals suggest increasing mental resilience is through optimism. When faced with a difficult situation, it can be easy to become pessimistic and focus on the negative. But, mental health professionals suggest that you can become more resilient to mental illness symptoms by developing an optimistic attitude toward challenges.

There are many ways that you can become more optimistic. Mental health professionals suggest finding outlets for positive self-talk. It gives them something to work for. I personally love to fly-fish or tie my own flies. It’s incredible how much better I feel after a morning spent in a river. The act of immersing myself in an activity that places me in the middle of nature with all of the sounds, smells, and sights has been incredibly beneficial for me.

Another great way to add purpose is to volunteer. Volunteering has long been shown to elevate mood and mental health in various ways. It can give you a sense of purpose and belonging. Doing good for others releases mental health chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, making us feel good. It can also increase social ties and provide a positive distraction from mental health struggles.

Rotarians are a worldwide business organization, and professional leaders are united to create positive, sustainable change in their communities. If that isn’t for you, check out the local Kiwanis or Lions clubs. Both are community-oriented service organizations that strive to meet community needs. Through volunteer service, members develop leadership and team-building skills and a sense of personal responsibility and empowerment.

Working in the trenches as an adult can be deeply satisfying. Still, you can’t deny that there is something exceptional about volunteering. There’s just something extra rewarding about helping those in need and making a positive impact on your community and yourself in the process.

When mental health symptoms take over your life, it can be easy for your days to blend together and become unfulfilling. When this happens, you might lose focus on the most important things in your life. However, mental health professionals suggest that by finding meaning in your daily routine, you can improve mental resilience.

3. Positive mental health practices

The third way mental health professionals suggest increasing mental resilience is through positive mental health practices. This includes getting enough sleep every night, avoiding alcohol and drugs, eating good food, exercising daily, meditating or praying, and surrounding yourself with supportive people.

In my experience, this is the most challenging goal to accomplish for first responders, especially for police and firefighters. There is a closed culture that exists in these professions. The result is that our first responders tend to only associate and talk to other first responders. The result of this tight social circle is a lot of complaining.

Its human nature to sit around and complain about the organization or profession as a whole. At the end of the day, all of this complaining amounts to nothing. Nothing is changed, nothing is solved, and in fact, you’re left with more feelings of negativity and hopelessness.

To break that cycle:

  1. Expand your social circle.
  2. Join a new social circle.
  3. Join a running club.
  4. Join a Crossfit gym.
  5. Join a church group.

Literally anything. Just make sure it’s not filled with people in the same industry.

I tend to not talk ‘cop’ with other people when I’m off-duty. I made that change years ago, and my mental health has never been stronger.

4. Stable relationships

The fourth way mental health professionals suggest increasing mental resilience is through stable, positive relationships with others. This includes getting help from other people, whether your therapist or friends and family members. Having other supportive people in your life can help decrease mental illness symptoms and make you more resilient to mental health challenges.

Previously in this article, we talked about finding friends outside of your industry. Really commit to them. Find ways to open up and openly share with them so that you can stay mentally healthy. It’s about having healthier mental habits.

On the flip side, there are also unhealthy mental habits that you should try and stop. These include: trying to do everything yourself and never relying on others for help; avoiding talking about your mental health with others because of fear or shame; shutting down if someone confronts you – instead take their feedback and adapt it to your mental health habits.

Being resilient does not mean that you have to go it alone and always be okay. It actually means facing mental illness without falling apart or giving up hope that things will get better. Many mental health professionals can help with this journey, so do not hesitate to reach out for support.
